The Sea of Light

The first instalment of the SUPERFAST novella series

Ivory white Ferrari 500 Superfast Coupé

From a picturesque fishing village in Fife, Johnnie Wilson exploded onto the racing scene in dramatic fashion. Gaining a podium position for the Prancing Horse at Le Mans has been amongst his crowning achievements. However, following tragedy at the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix, Wilson questions whether to continue to pursue the sport that has claimed the lives of so many close friends.

Following Ferrari's decision to boycott the 1968 season, Wilson is left with nothing to do. However, a chance encounter in Monaco might give him a new avenue to explore should he decide to hang up his helmet for good.

MONACO

MAY 1968

Only two drivers had ever ended up in the waters of Port Hercules. A double world champion was one of them. Leading the 1955 race in his No.26 Lancia D50, Alberto Ascari miscalculated the chicane coming out of the tunnel and crashed through the barriers. While his car sank to the bottom, Ascari managed to swim back to shore. Johnnie Wilson would have much preferred taking his chances in the murky Mediterranean any day than to suffer Lorenzo Bandini’s fiery fate twelve years later.

Even one year on, the shocking scene still made him shudder. A fireball in the hay bales. His teammate trapped, and the rotors of the media helicopter fanning the flames. Wilson could only imagine the excruciating pain and panic poor Lorenzo had been experiencing. Sometimes it kept him awake at night just thinking about it. Only it wasn’t Bandini screaming in agony. It was him.
